Jim Dine Valentine

 Jim Dine
June 16, 1935
He is considered a Pop artist for his subject matter of everyday popular symbols and objects. He is famous for his beloved hearts, bathrobes, tools, & Pinocchio.
We focus on his hearts for our Feburay assignment. I show a powerpoint of Mr. Dine's art focusing on identifying his style.
We talk about what ideas he repeats on his hearts and come up with a list. We call this list the "style buffet", because I have the kids choose 2 or more from many things to use from Dine's style to intermingle with their own style and ideas on their heart.
STYLE BUFFET
Colorful, Patchy, Bold Black Outline, Organized Sloppy, color blending, three dimensional shading, Print style (in groups of 2, 4, 6).
Students use oil pastels to begin with their hearts. They can make them symmetrical or free form. I show them how to fold the paper to make symmetrical hearts or get scratch paper folded and cut a heart as a pattern if repeating is desired. We go over the positive and negatives of the oil pastels and warn them about the mess they can create. But, I tell them that the oil and smudge is what makes them work so well. Neat, tight, details will be hard to get and may lead to a frustrated artist. These pastels are meant for fast, free, blended art.

These are the student examples over the last 10 years here at Mineola MIddle School..
